Axle Shaft

An axle shaft is one of the most important components of your vehicle's drivetrain. Its job is to transfer power from the differential to the wheels, allowing your vehicle to move. Whether you drive a rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive vehicle, your axle shafts are designed to handle the engine's torque while supporting the demands of acceleration, towing, off-road driving, and everyday use.
Over time, axle shafts can become worn, bent, twisted, or damaged due to heavy loads, oversized tires, aggressive driving, lack of lubrication, or component failure. A damaged axle shaft can cause vibrations, clicking or clunking noises, poor handling, and, in severe cases, complete loss of power to the wheels.
Rear Axle Shafts
In most rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the rear axle shafts are solid shafts that connect the differential side gears directly to the rear wheels. They are responsible for transmitting all of the engine's torque to the tires while supporting the weight and stress placed on the axle assembly.
Common rear axle shaft problems include:
Twisted or broken splinesBent axle shaftsWorn bearing surfacesDamaged wheel studsBroken flangesBearing and seal wear
If left unrepaired, a damaged rear axle shaft can also lead to differential damage, leaking axle seals, and premature bearing failure.
Front Axle Shafts and U-Joints
On many four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs, the front axle shaft assembly is made up of two axle shafts connected by a universal joint (U-joint). These assemblies allow power to be transferred from the front differential to the wheels while also allowing the wheels to turn left and right during steering.
The assembly typically consists of:
An inner axle shaftAn outer stub shaftA heavy-duty U-joint connecting the two shafts
The U-joint allows the axle shafts to operate smoothly even when the steering wheel is turned, making it an essential part of a four-wheel-drive front axle.
Over time, front axle U-joints can wear out due to age, lack of lubrication, water intrusion, rust, or heavy off-road use. Worn U-joints often cause:
Clicking or popping while turningClunking noises when shifting into gearVibrations while drivingBinding when four-wheel drive is engagedPremature wear of axle shafts and wheel bearings
Ignoring a failing U-joint can eventually lead to a broken axle shaft or complete loss of four-wheel-drive capability.
What Is a Stub Shaft?
A stub shaft is the outer portion of a front axle assembly that passes through the steering knuckle and wheel bearing before connecting to the wheel hub. It is joined to the inner axle shaft by a U-joint, allowing the assembly to transmit power while the wheels are turning.
Because stub shafts are exposed to constant steering movement and heavy loads, they can develop worn splines, damaged bearing surfaces, or cracks over time. A worn stub shaft can also damage the wheel bearing, locking hub, or axle seal if not repaired promptly.
Professional Axle Shaft Repair
At Western Drivetrain, we inspect every axle shaft, stub shaft, and front axle U-joint for signs of wear, damage, and excessive play. Whether your vehicle needs a replacement axle shaft, new U-joints, bearing replacement, or a complete front or rear axle rebuild, our experienced technicians have the knowledge and specialized tools to get the job done right.
If you're experiencing vibrations, unusual noises, four-wheel-drive problems, or suspect an axle shaft issue, don't wait until it causes more extensive drivetrain damage. Our team specializes in axle repair, differential repair, front axle repair, U-joint replacement, and complete drivetrain repair in Aurora, CO, helping keep your truck, Jeep, SUV, or work vehicle reliable both on and off the road.
